I'm finally here!

After delays, stressful arrangements, a long bumpy flight, I arrived in Mumbai...

At the same time I was looking for a plate with my name between the bunch of heads looking for their passengers, in the overcrowded arrivals gate, I was wondering... "Why am I so scarily anxious!? I've done this on my own without any driver or hotel reservation arranged." Don't know, maybe I'm getting scared of crowds and mess, two of Mumbai's middle names.

That's what I remember seeing as soon as I left the airport, crowds and mess. Lots of people, carrying lots of things, moving and moving in lots of directions, under this hot sticky weather.

We're staying at Navi Mumbai, according to my certified translation by a real Indian dude , means New Mumbai, one hour drive from the center on a good day.

Today we drove around town , visited Gateaway of India and Victoria Central Station...

Sports definitely move people and makes you pay attention. And actually made me feel kind of happy that Bruins got it =)

Do you know, that stressed movie scene of someone trying to buy a flight ticket at the airport counter! Man I just lived that ...

Me and Carmen were trying to buy tickets to Cayman islands on Internet, but both of our credit cards didn't go through. So we decided to go to the airport to buy it at the counter... All good, my nervous system was still fine!

Got there the lady was able to see my unprocessed reservation but was telling me that she was "only" ALMOST 100% sure that it would be canceled. I'm a bit paranoid about the "almost "word, I got to confess!

Because I didn't wanted to pay for 2 tickets we wondered and wondered, the lady checked and checked, ending up deciding to continue the process by paying it in cash at the counter.
Mine was done, what next? Carmen didn't have place in the same flight ... so we wondered and wondered the lady checked and checked making us decide it was all good, we could meet on the way to Cayman!
While paying the lady says "Wait a minute where are you guys from? Angolan passport needs a visa!" I thought "NO WORRIES" we both hold Portuguese passports, apart from one little detail Carmen wasn't sure she had brought her... so while we wondered and wondered and the lady didn't even checked anymore! I decided I couldn't wonder more and we came back with no tickets LOL

Anyway Carmen checked her stuff and she have her Portuguese passport ... Thank GOD! The reservations are still on hold so we can comeback tomorrow and finally finish this novel!!!!

After all the stress of this trip preparation, here I am writing from Boston!

Can't avoid the impact of flying from Africa to the land of the "dreams come true", been finding myself standing still amazed, observing and noting bits and peices of the most random things!
First week is gone and I already feel like I have so many things to tell, but is kind of late and I should be reading this huge book which I've only read 2 chapters of the seven, the teacher have asked!!! I know, I know I'm not in high school anymore but it's been so nice outside...

All I can say is that Boston is beautiful in Spring, it's been nice and warm outside, heaps of people hanging in the parks, pretty flowers in the front yards, packed esplanades...

, but nah! Not everyone enjoys the aesthetic appeal of it. Like in Europe no one wants to be caught in the rain, just get home as soon as possible to avoid the nightmare of traffic jam, flooded roads, etc it really gets chaotic.

Ever finally made it to France to see his baby Maelo birth!

He was in such a stress with his passport and the impossibility to travel, that when I called him last Friday to check how things were going, I didn't even recognized is sad voice!

Honestly is one of the most interesting people I've met in my short experience here so far, with a beautiful attitude towards life.

I still remember how impressed I got when my French teacher, at the office, shared with us that the reason why he had to wear such big glasses was the long nights of study by the Candlelight, to be able to keep up with the other students at school, which subjects were though in a "new" native language.

And today here I am, typing on my cute notebook until the battery survives. =)

Got home with power generator soundtrack, tried to do as much as I could using natural light, until I decided to get less bored at my aunty's place. She tents to act like my mum forcing me to have dinner every time I come by =)!

For a while listened to my aunt making jokes about the shining long fake hair of a TV host that “was” once my uncle’s lover, enough time to escape from the obligated dinner.

Off I went...

and kept going on my get less bored journey, now to another aunt that also lives close by, needed to give her some money to pay my Internet bill, usually I can’t do it because Movicel shares the same business hours with me, no E-payment, ATM or Whatsoever as alternative, or I go to work or pay the Internet bill!!!

Found her sitting at the doorstep, sipping her cold beer from a glass that my mum labels as "Reco Reco" (or IKEA for the up to date generation, the ones we could break without making her get mad) and enjoying the fresh breeze.

We laugh with the fact that I forgot where I left something, again!!!!! This time was my Portuguese self phone.
“That’s what happens when you have home everywhere, kept those in Portugal, threw this away in UK, got that in Angola, forgot this in Australia...”

And we chat for a while... until she raised the deadlock question:

"So now you're going to stay, right?"

The soft water keeps hiting the hard rock with the same question all over again =) !Replied that I didn’t know, but most probably not, to what she argued back:

"Why not? You got yourself a good job... You were born here, right!? And even if you leave you will always want to come back! Here’s your country!!!"

Post-Colonialism: Trying to Regain Ethnic Individuality

"All post-colonial societies are still subject in one way or another to overt or subtle forms of neo-colonial domination, and independence has not solved the problem" (Ashcroft 2).

After colonialism, new elites, often in the form of dictators, frequently rose and still rise to power in post-colonial countries. In Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah, Ikem complains about countrymen worse than thieves,

"leaders who openly looted our treasury, whose effrontery soiled our national soul" (Achebe 39).

Ikem refers not to the white strangers but rather to Africans who have ruled with policies similar to those of colonial oppression. With the British empire gone, African societies must look inward to find remnants of colonialism which continue to harm their nations, and perhaps, find those which are advantageous in the new world they have been thrust into. Ikem's speech directed to all Nigerians rather than to any particular class pleads,

"you must develop the habit of skepticism, not swallow every piece of superstition you are told by witch doctors and professors... When you rid yourself of these things your potentiality for assisting and directing this nation will be quadrupled" (Achebe 148).

Part of the danger of the term post-colonial stems from people's disregard of their responsibility for their situation. As Ikem notes in his speech, people prefer to blame other groups, perhaps even post-colonialism, for their problems and rarely comprehend that only they can help themselves.

Too much has changed to simply revert to the old ways of life. New problems exist and will continue to do so unless one can learn to deal them in the modern context. Blaming post-colonial syndrome for the ills of developing countries sentences those countries to continue in their state of hardship. Rewinding the clock to prevent colonialism from occurring is impossible, so we must look at each issue now, in the modern context, as a separate problem ...
